Kandy Lozano

Kandy Lozano is a contemporary abstract painter best known for her signature layered wax paintings. She works in the ancient medium of encaustic where she heats and layers pigmented beeswax and resin. This provides a distinct kind of structure with the wax that allows her to build up the surface layer by tangible layer. Her process is to scrape back and reveal some of what was just put down. In a sense, like speeding up the effects of time. The kind of flaking, oxidizing, melting, scratching and eroding that slowly takes place in response to atmospheric and geological conditions resulting in weathered complexity. Wax has surprising optical depth, so the history of the work is particularly visible. There is a delicacy and mystery to the surface, and yet it’s a material that stands up to scraping and to heat while providing the inspiration. There is an underlying sense of structure that she can maneuver and manipulate throughout the work, challenging her to push the boundaries just a little bit farther.

She lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

In her latest series "Smoke and Mirrors," Kandy Lozano skillfully manipulates perception, employing subtle and refined techniques to blur the distinction between reality and illusion.

Through ethereal shapes and distorted reflections, viewers are drawn into a captivating realm where perceptions are challenged and truth is elusive.

Lozano intended to craft a poignant metaphor for the deceptive nature of appearances, emphasizing that true essence often lies beneath the surface. Like the intricate mechanisms hidden within a fine watch or luxury car, her paintings invite contemplation of what lies beyond initial impressions.

As she encourages viewers to engage deeply, Lozano aims for her paintings to provoke reflection and discovery with each viewing. The interplay of scale, angle, and lighting inspires the work to reveal new dimensions, offering a dynamic and evolving experience.
